The new official rules of golf came into effect this year and cover some changes related to the course of this game. This update includes key elements such as handicap usage, ball moved by natural forces, back-on-the-line relief procedures and more. Below, you will find out about the 5 key changes to the rules of golf in 2023.
Argentine Golf Association (AGA) summed up these changes as follows:
- Modifications for Players with Disabilities: This time, the new general rules include changes intended for people with disabilities. These ones are valid for all those players belonging to the categories covered in Rule 25, which is meant to assure fair play between golfers with disabilities and golfers with no disabilities, the same level, or different types of disabilities.
- Handicap Usage in Stroke Play: Players will no longer be penalized for failing to put their handicap on their scorecard in stroke play. The committee will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of each player’s handicap.
- Golf Club Damaged During Round: Players will be allowed to replace a damaged club during a round, provided they did not damage it through abuse.
- Ball Moved by Natural Forces: Any ball at rest must be replaced if it moves to another area of the course or comes to rest out of bounds after being dropped, placed or replaced.
- Back-on-the-Line Relief Procedure: The back-on-the-line relief procedure, often used for penalty area and unplayable ball relief, was simplified so that the player now drops their ball on the line. Besides, the ball must come to rest within one club-length of where it is dropped.
